Drug Induced Male Erectile Dysfunction Overview:
  • The physiologic mechanisms associated with the normal sexual response include vascular, neurogenic, psychogenic, & hormonal factors.
  • These physiologic mechanisms are coordinated centrally in the hypothalamus, limbic system, & cerebral cortex.
  • Drugs may induce erectile dysfunction by altering any of the physiological mechanisms outlined above, i.e. adrenergic inhibition, adrenergic-receptor blockade, anticholinergic action, as well as endocrine & sedative effects.
Central nervous system drugs:
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Butyrophenones
  • Cyclobenzaprine
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • Orphenadrine
  • Phenothiazines
  • SSRIs
  • Thioxanthenes
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
Antihypertensive drugs:
  • Beta-blockers (esp propranolol)
  • Clonidine
  • Diuretics
  • Guanethidine
  • Methyldopa
  • Thiazide diuretics
