- The physiologic mechanisms associated with the normal sexual response include vascular, neurogenic, psychogenic, & hormonal factors.
- These physiologic mechanisms are coordinated centrally in the hypothalamus, limbic system, & cerebral cortex.
- Drugs may induce erectile dysfunction by altering any of the physiological mechanisms outlined above, i.e. adrenergic inhibition, adrenergic-receptor blockade, anticholinergic action, as well as endocrine & sedative effects.
